NDP Transport Critic Taylor Bachrach and NDP Labour Critic Matthew Green made the following joint statement in response to the strike vote by members of the Teamsters Canadian Rail Conference:
“New Democrats are urging the government to press Canadian National Railway (CN) and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) to remain at the bargaining table with the Teamsters until a fair deal is reached.
The rail workers have raised serious concerns that must be addressed. It’s troubling that Canada’s two largest railways seem to be collaborating to undermine longstanding collective agreements. The safety of workers, communities and the environment are at stake in these negotiations.
The membership of the Teamsters has spoken with a clear and united voice, demonstrating their commitment to ensuring that workplace safety and fair labour practices are upheld. It is disheartening to learn that, even after six months of negotiations, there has been little progress.
Safety should never be compromised, and the lives of Canadians should never be bargained with.
New Democrats stand with Canada’s rail workers in their fight for a fair contract, fair process and for their rights and safety. We’re calling on the Liberal government to do the same.”
